When you choose graphics or symbols that your users already understand, you'll provide a familiar experience. This results in a truly intuitive interface. When you design using metaphors, use a word-image association game. For example, the word "publication" leads to images of books, newspapers, or newsletters. The word "tree" makes people think of branches, leaves, trunk, and roots. Your desktop computer uses metaphors with trash cans, in boxes, phones, and file folders.
